Careers in SecurityGetting a career in the security industry is a very rewarding task. Starting a career in the said industry can be extremely challenging but the rewards are definitely worth the investment of time, energy and other resources. There are several paths one can take when entering the security industry. Here are a few of them:

  • Security patrol. If you are the type who has a strong sense of adventure and always likes to be on-the-go, then this job would suit you. Your job is to roam the perimeter of your assigned location and look for any suspicious or alarming signs or people.
  • Access control. The security industry is very varied and you could choose to be assigned to a home or office where you monitor who gets to enter and who steps out. This will require you to have a strong sense of vigilance and trustworthiness as the security of the residential or commercial area will literally be in your hands.
  • Housing or residential security. If you are the type of person who loves to interact with different types of people on a daily basis, this is probably the ideal career for you in the security industry. Taking this path will require to become familiar with the people who make their home in the area that you will be monitoring. You will also have to familiarize yourself with the people who commonly visit them. This is the type of job where you will likely encounter many people who will pretend to be someone that they are not.
  • Construction site security. Sometimes the line of work that you will get assigned to will depend on the security company or firm that hires you. It is possible to get assigned to a construction site. Here you will have to monitor who goes in and out of the construction site. Because this is a very risk-prone area, it is essential to become familiar with the names and faces of the people who work at the site and ensure that they are all authorised to be there.
  • Personal security. This is a career path that is typically reserved for those who have been in the security industry for quite some time. Here the life of another person will literally be in your hands. You will have to be very observant of your surroundings and notice any suspicious or out-of-the-ordinary activity and alert other security personnel who are working with you.

It cannot be denied that working in the security industry is not only challenging, it is also risky and life-threatening. But it also cannot be denied that it would be difficult to find a career path that is as courageous or fulfilling. You literally can go home at the end of the day knowing that you kept safe the lives of people who are under your watch. You might also be surprised at how far the career will take you. In your job you will probably meet many people who have connections or might even want to hire you for themselves if you do a pristine job.

One thing that you need to remember in the security industry is that appearances are very important. You will be judged and evaluated according to how professional and intimidating you look. Let us not kid ourselves; you will not become a millionaire by entering the security industry. But the benefits and rewards that come with the job are definitely priceless. You will learn and become a better person as your career flourishes along with your new skills.
