Maybe you’ve been in your job for years and you fancy a change.  Maybe you’ve suddenly found yourself unemployed, maybe you are just starting out in the job market, or maybe you just want to re-evaluate what is important in life.

Thinking about where our careers are going and what we want from our working lives is something we should all do from time to time to check that we are on the right track – after all a healthy attitude equals a healthy life.  We spend a huge part of our lives at work so it’s vitally important that we are happy in our jobs. Happiness at work can reduce our stress levels and even lengthen our lives.

There are several things you can do to help you to focus on what you want from your job.

Questions to ask yourself:

Are you happy in your current job?

If not why not?

Are there any changes that you can make to make it better?

What do you love doing?

Who is your ideal employer?

What are your ideal working conditions?

What things are important to you? Money? Working environment? Place? Something else?

Are you happier as part of a team or working alone?

Would you rather work for an employer or for yourself?

Imagine yourself ten years from now – what are you doing?

If you could change your job/career right now what is it that you would you be doing instead?

Are there any changes that you can make to take you closer to this goal? Training? Research? Finding out about self-employment? Contacting a specialist recruitment agency?

If you have discovered that you are in the ideal job already – congratulations – you don’t need to do anything! If you are not, don’t be too hard on yourself, it is never too late to start working towards achieving the life you aspire to. It may be that you want a whole new career, it may be that you want to work for a different company, you might want to cut down (or increase) your working hours, it may be that you want to work for yourself.

Taking these small steps can help you identify your wants and needs.Identifying what you want from your working life is just the first step on the path to changing your career and living the life you want.  Set yourself small goals and check in with yourself regularly to check your progress and keep on track.  Before you know it those small changes will have turned into something big.
