How to Become a Great Leader

There are two types of people, leaders and followers. While this may sound simplistic, it isn’t far from the truth.

Everywhere in society, from churches to businesses, leaders bring their groups closer to their goals by channelling their focus towards a central focus. What makes a good effective leader and how can one become a more effective leader?

Firstly, a leader must understand their followers. In a way, the leader is the representative of the group. He or she should understand what the group’s goals and priorities are and be able to act on those accordingly.

A leader who does not fully understand this will create situations or make decisions that will destroy unity in the group. Unity is one of the most important things in a group and it’s important to foster it, not destroy it.

Unity

Unity is the measure of the feeling of union in a group. It isn’t a tangible object, but it has many tangible benefits. A group that’s united can do much more than a group that is scattered or indifferent.

By fostering unity, a leader can allow his group to do a lot more. By motivating the group and creating clear goals and incentives for the followers, a leader can turn any group into an efficient machine.

Decisiveness

A leader must be able to make quick decisions while also taking into account all variables. This is one of the most important skills in the toolkit of a leader and it is important to practice this as often as possible. Indecisiveness will create doubt within followers which undermines authority.

By being decisive and keeping your group’s goals in mind when making those decisions, a leader creates trust and respect in their followers.

This in turn creates more unity and it creates an upward cycle. The more respect a leader has, the more they can do. The more they do, the more respect they earn.

How does one become an effective leader?

Great leaders have a well developed mental toolkit to use whenever situations arise. The first step in developing a mental toolkit is learning how to think strategically and analytically. When leaders look at a situation, they see all the variables and possibilities.

They tend to think in terms of the big picture. It’s important to look at things from different angles and theorize on all the possibilities. Leaders see opportunities where regular people don’t. This is what sets them apart: the lenses they use when they look at situations.

Along with good analytical skills, it’s important to be optimistic. Optimists make better leaders because of their ability to inspire action in their followers. When a leader believes in the ability of a group to accomplish a task, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Some people are born leaders, but it doesn’t mean anybody can’t be a leader. Some leaders learn from the fire of experience and forge their own form of leadership.

Everybody will lead a little differently, but most leaders follow these important aspects. Effective leaders are important in any walk of life and being a great leader, especially in this day and age, is something that anybody can aspire to.
