An alkaline balanced diet will create a healthy environment for your body. For those who don’t quite understand the whole alkaline and acidic foods issue, here is a brief overview.
Foods are classified as acid-forming or alkalizing depending on the effect they have on your body. Acid-forming foods contribute hydrogen ions to the body, making it more acidic. Alkalizing foods remove hydrogen ions from the body, making it more alkaline. This classification is based on the effect foods have on the body after digestion, not how they taste to us.
Acidity and alkalinity are measured in pH (potential of hydrogen). The pH scale goes from 0 to 14, with 0 being the most acidic, and 14 the most alkaline. A healthy pH balance ranges between 7.35 and 7.45.
So why is it so important to keep your system alkalized? Diseases like cancer, arthritis and heart disease thrive in an acid environment. The acid in your body will weaken your immune system as it eats away your healthy defense mechanisms like your arteries and your tissues.
