Bad breath (halitosis) is a plague for many people. It’s a nuisance for the one who has the problem as well as for those who have dealings with the plagued individual. Some people still have bad breath even though they are very meticulous with their mouth care.
They may brush religiously and floss as their dentist prescribes. They may use advanced tooth gear and the strongest mouthwash on the market. Still, that skunky odor just will not go away. Perhaps it’s time to tackle the problem from a different angle. Many times, the problem can be corrected if the cause is addressed.
Causes of Bad Breath
Did you know that your body produces approximately 3 pints of saliva daily? This is a good thing as this saliva contains minerals that help correct microscopic tooth decay. Saliva helps wash foodborne bacteria from areas in the mouth that toothbrushes and floss just do not reach. A dry mouth will cause odor-causing bacteria to quickly multiply. That’s why we have foul breath when we wake up in the morning. Many times, a moist mouth will help keep that stench from building up and offending others. Drink water often. It’s good for you anyway and it will keep the mouth moist.
Probably you know that certain foods are notorious for producing bad breath. Two of the greatest offenders are garlic and onions. Ironically, garlic and onions are both very good for the body so you might not want to stay away from them completely. You will have to learn how to incorporate them into your diet so that your body metabolizes them better.
Some people have bad breath because of certain health problems. Diabetes, liver and kidney diseases, and respiratory and sinus infections are some of the reasons for offending breath. If you do suffer from chronic bad breath, you may want to check with your physician to see what health issues you body may be confronting.
Foods for Correcting Breath
Correcting bad breath can be a challenge, but it is certainly not impossible. Your dentist or physician can help you address health issues. Additionally, you may want to consider the following foods to help control the problem:
- Cinnamon — Cinnamon contains cinnamaldehyde, an essential oil that eliminates odor and prevents bacterial growth.
- Oregano — this aromatic herb does wonders for bad breath. Its antioxidant properties battle halitosis germs and win every time.
- Parsley — a sprig of parsley can be chewed or juiced. The chlorophyll in parsley is good for the blood and is good for fighting odor-causing germs in the mouth.
- Celery — The natural fibers of celery are great for cleaning the teeth and the back of the tongue. The roughage is good for the bowels as well.
- Lemon — Lemon is a natural deodorizer containing several antibacterial properties.
- Sage — Sage can be rubbed on the gums and teeth to keep foul odors at bay.
- Coriander — Coriander can be rubbed on the gums are added to foods to deliver several antiseptic and antibacterial compounds.
