Although most people equate the need for hip replacement surgery with serious medical issues such as bone tumors and rheumatoid arthritis, there are also many people each year who end up developing hip and other joint issues as a result of gaining and carrying lot of weight. Because of this, it is always important to take steps to keep your weight in line.

For example, if you quit smoking and this causes you to gain 50 pounds, you could end up needing a hip replacement surgery. Therefore, anyone who is at risk for gaining a lot of weight should be proactive so that they can prevent themselves from causing damage to their bones and joints.

Causes For Replacement Surgery

There are many medical issues that can cause an individual to experience severe issues with one or both of their hips. The most common issues that lead to a replacement surgery include osteonecrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, bone tumors that have broken down the joints and any injuries that have had a serious impact on the joints. However, unexpected weight gain has also become a leading cause.

In most cases, a physician will attempt to treat issues with physical therapy, walking aids, medications and an exercise program before they suggest moving on to surgery. As all surgeries are serious, other options should be investigated and exhausted before considering a major operation.

As complications could develop, it should be a last resort. As an example, failure in replacement hip components have led to malfunctioning units; you can read more about it by doing a Google search on the term “Stryker Hip Recall Information.”

It is also important to note that some people are poor candidates for medical procedures. For example, if you have Parkinson’s disease or are in overall poor health, you may end up needing to deal with your bone problem in a different manner.

Serious Consequences of Weight Gain

Each joint in our body bears the brunt of every action that we make, and they also need to be able to withstand the bulk of our bodies. Because of this, it can be very difficult for our hips to deal with any large fluctuations in our weight.

After all, the larger an individual is, the more stress that their entire body will be put through on a daily basis. This can be extremely problematic for a smaller individual who suddenly gains a lot of weight because their joints will have become accustomed to supporting their typical frame.

Hip Replacement Surgery Isn’t Fail Proof

Regardless of whether you are dealing with pain because you have gained weight or are dealing with another medical issue, it is always important to consult with your doctor immediately if you begin experiencing difficulty while performing your daily tasks.

However, keep in mind the hip replacement surgery does come with some risks, so it is typical for physicians to attempt to correct the problem without utilizing a surgical option. Additionally, even if you are a prime candidate for an implant procedure, there is no guarantee that the process will fix your problem because some hip replacements are faulty.

If you do undergo hip replacement surgery, you should let your doctor know right away if you begin experiencing unusual symptoms or find yourself in a lot of pain. Additionally, it is a good idea to consult with an attorney if you have any reason to believe that you have been given a defective hip replacement.
