Advocates of detox diets assert that our bodies are exposed to a multitude of toxins. These range from the chemical compounds used in processed food to the pollutants in the air. These toxins can cause imbalances in the immune system, bad breath, and even weight gain. The theory behind detox diets claims that a period of simplicity of food intake, usually limited to a particular type of food or food group, gives our bodies the space to effectively rid itself of these toxins. Detox diets have gained in popularity in recent years, so that there are many different forms on the market., Below are some of the most popular.

The Master Cleanse

Arguably the most well-known detox diet, partly due to Beyonce claiming to have lost several kilograms over a 10-day period while on the diet, the Master Cleanse has actually been around since the 1970s. It involves drinking between six and ten glasses of a concoction made by combining spring water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. At the end of each day you drink a herbal tea laxative. It is intended to rid the body of mucous and clean the colon. It also means the dieter loses weight. A less drastic form of the diet includes some fruit and vegetables.

Raw Food Diet

The raw food detox diet entails removing meat and dairy entirely from your diet and eating remaining foods in their natural state. Fruit and vegetables are consumed without cooking, as are nuts, seeds and grains. It is intended to give the body the maximum nutritional benefit from whole foods and restore enzyme imbalances.

Colon Cleanse

The colon is a major organ in the processing of food into energy. The colon cleanse detox diet aims to clear the colon of unwanted debris and make subsequent nutrient absorption more efficient. It is liquid diet undertaken for between seven and ten days, during which time the individual consumes water, soup and fruit and vegetable juices. They also take a laxative or have an enema each day.

Fruit Flush

Similar in goal to the colon cleanse, the fruit flush diet is more restrictive, eliminating all foods except fruit for a period of three days. Fruit is eaten every two hours to help flush toxins from the colon and digestive system.

Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox

Devised by a naturopathic doctor called Roni DeLuz, the Martha’s Vineyard diet entails limiting the intake of acidic foods to realign the body’s natural alkaline balance. It involves taking a variety of fruit and vegetable juices along with vitamin, mineral and antioxidant supplements for a period of 21 days. It also claims that you can lose almost two stones in weight during this time.

Liver Cleansing Diet

Devised by an Australian doctor, the Liver Cleansing Diet targets the organ in the body that is primarily responsible for ridding the body of toxins. This detox aims to increase the liver’s effectiveness. It does so by proposing a diet that is heavy on fruit and vegetables, alongside some fish and poultry, as well as good fats such as those in olive oil and avocado. Dairy is forbidden, as is red meat. Individuals on this detox must also drink between eight and twelve large glasses of water each day. The diet is designed to be undertaken for eight weeks.
