The quality of your mattress can significantly affect your sleeping experience; thus, it is essential to have the best bed possible. If you want to enjoy good health, you need to have healthy and peaceful sleep every single night. For this reason, if your once comfortable mattress starts to feel like a torture chamber, it is time to consider replacing it with a new one.

Unfortunately, unlike most furniture, recognizing that it’s time to replace your old mattress with a new one is not very easy. There are times when a mattress will still feel comfortable even if it can no longer provide your body with the proper spine support and comfort. Additionally, mattresses are rather costly; thus, a lot of people hang onto their old beds. If you feel that you are being economical by prolonging the life of your mattress, you are sacrificing good night’s sleep which will only lead to health problems and complications in the long run.

Do I Need A New Mattress?

Generally, mattresses must be replaced at least every ten years. This is due to the fact that old mattresses accumulate allergens and dust mites with years of usage. These can lead to poor quality of sleep and can cause health problems. With that said, there are other signs you need to watch out for that might alert you when it is time to let go of the old mattress.

  • When you start waking up with body aches, pains, and muscle cramps
  • You feel tired, groggy, and irritable despite sleeping all night
  • If you start feeling the coils on the mattress when you lie down
  • If the mattress looks worn out and you see coils poking out
  • If the mattress sags or droops which is a clear indication that it has lost its support
  • Once you feel that your arm or other extremities falls asleep or start to tingle when you sleep on your side or stomach. This is a sign that your bed has become too hard.
  • If you sit on the bed and it creaks
  • Frequent tossing and turning at night might be an indication that your mattress needs replacing.

Tips For Buying A Mattress

When you shop for a new mattress, you must remember that there is no single bed that works great for everyone. You must choose a mattress that can provide you with proper support that can align your spine while you sleep. The mattress comfort level will depend on your personal taste and preference. Your main goal when shopping for a new bed is to choose the mattress that offers the right balance between back support and comfort. To help you choose the right bed, you must look for these three important qualities:

Softness: The mattress must be soft enough to keep you comfortable and relaxed while sleeping. It must be able to contour to your body shape perfectly. The best method to test the firmness of the mattress is to lie down on it for a few minutes before you decide on anything.

Support: The bed must provide enough support depending on your body shape and sleeping position. The right bed must ensure the proper alignment of your spine while sleeping. Additionally, the softness and support of the mattress must go hand-in-hand.

Size: When choosing a bed, size matters. Since you move a lot in your sleep, the mattress must accommodate full body movements. Some of the average sizes of mattresses are:

  • Twin: 38″ x 75″
  • Queen: 60″ x 80″
  • King: 76″ x 80″

It is recommended to select a mattress that is at least 4-5 inches longer than you, and wide enough so that you can sleep comfortably. Other factors, such as sleeping with a partner, room and body size, and budget, will affect your decision.
