Essentials for City Living

City living isn’t for everyone but most city dwellers will proudly profess their love for their city. People who enjoy the fast-pace, exciting things the city offers will tell you that despite the noise, sometimes dirty, and small spaces, the pros outweigh the cons by far if you’re smart about the way you live. Many people move to the city to pursue new job opportunities, to attend school, or for a simple change in scenery.

No matter the reason for your dramatic move, it’s important to be smart about your new lifestyle. You need to find an affordable living space, know your public transportation, and travel smart. Folding shopping carts and Google Maps are now your two best friends and Starbucks is your new favorite drink. By following a few tips below, you can become the ultimate city-dweller and before you know it, you’ll be showing your out-of-town friends the works of the city.

Find an affordable living space
Cities are notorious for their small yet pricey living spaces which is why it’s so important to spend some time looking around for a good deal. Location is key and you need to find something close to your job and your favorite hotspots around the city. You may have to give up the extra space you might have grown accustomed to in order to find something affordable.

Know your public transportation
Once you move to the city, you’ll realize how much you rely on public transportation which is why it’s so important to learn the basics of the subway system in your city. From buses to subways to trains, it may take a while to get the hang of transportation, but once you do, you’ll be exactly like the natives. Use common sense when traveling and keep an eye on your belongings and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Travel smart
Cities are crowded, therefore it’s important to travel smart – the more compact, the better! Take a folding shopping cart grocery shopping and take advantage of messenger bags and backpacks to avoid the bulkiness of a normal bag or suitcase. Nothing is worse than consistently bumping into people with a bulky and heavy bag on the subway or streets while out and about so spare yourself the frustration and travel smart.

While city living isn’t for everyone, many people love the unique atmosphere that the city presents. It’s important to learn the ropes of the city, whether its public transportation or finding the best place to live without breaking the bank. Take advantage of tools at your disposal to make life easier, such as Google Maps, iPhones (you can’t travel without music!) and compact bags and enjoy your stay!
