Celebrities have often looked to cash in on their public image through various business ventures, from keep fit videos to meat grilling machines. However, some of the most high profile are those who branch out into the fashion world. Here we look at five celebrities who’ve had varying degrees of success in their style-minded operations.

Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham first came to public notice in the early ’90s as the ‘Posh’ member of the Spice Girls. She then added to her celebrity by marrying handsome and limelight friendly footballer, David Beckham. Since 2004, Victoria has begun to carve out a very significant niche for herself in the fashion world. Her fashion line, Victoria Beckham, features clothes and accessories that are designed along the lines of the glamorous look she herself has always favoured. The Victoria Beckham brand has gone from strength to strength in terms of credibility and earnings. Beloved of fashion editors, well-off ordinary people and movie stars like Kate Winslet, Victoria is destined to stay in the fashion industry for the long haul.

Kanye West

Kanye West has had a spectacularly successful music career since 2004 with every album grossing millions of dollars. As well as his love of music, West also has a genuine interest in design and has worked with some of the big names, including Fendi and Louis Vuitton. In 2009, he designed a line of women’s shoes for Louis Vuitton and in October, 2011, West debuted his own women’s fashion line – DW Kanye West – at Paris Fashion Week. Though beautifully crafted, West’s designs which rely heavily on leather, fur and zips didn’t find favour with either the fashion intelligentsia or the general public.

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson was making a nice career for herself as a singer and actress when, in 2003, she and her new husband, Nick Lachey, took part in an MTV reality show. Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, caused her rise to fame to become meteoric. In 2005, Simpson started her own fashion line – The Jessica Simpson Collection – which has seen a similarly meteoric rise to fame and fortune. The Jessica Simpson Collection is a line of clothing and accessories for women and children and it bases its philosophy on making the Jessica Simpson style affordable and available to the ordinary woman. Grossing almost $1 billion in 2011, this seems to be a lucrative philosophy.

Melissa Odabash

American born Melissa Odabash made her name in the fashion industry itself. A world renowned catwalk and swimwear model, Odabash moved to Italy where she began to produce handmade swimwear. In the 1990s her designs became world famous. Odabash now lives in London, and her swimwear and beachwear is available both in her own stores and in upmarket stores throughout the world. Melissa Odabash has worked with many well established designers and celebrities, including Julien Macdonald and Gwyneth Paltrow and Vogue have described her swimwear as being, ‘The Ferraris of the bikini world.’

Justin Timberlake

Justin Timberlake began his career as a twelve year old on the New Mickey Mouse Club, he then became screamingly famous as a member of boy band N Sync. However, his success was no flash in the pan. Timberlake continues to be very successful both as a singer and as an actor. In 2005, Justin Timberlake launched his clothing line – William Rast – with childhood friend Trace Ayala. A successful line that offers outerwear, sportswear, denim and casual wear for both men and women, the William Rast line takes its inspiration from the casual elegance of Elvis Presley and the stylish look of Frank Sinatra.

So, while the world of celebrity can at times appear otherworldly and crass, these enterprising individuals show that if a lot of money and a bit of nous are put together – successful businesses can be made.
