Who here knows the story of Robert Downey Jr? We’ve all seen him in the Sherlock Holmes, Iron Man, and Avengers movies. Many of us know him as a successful, highly talented and entertaining actor. But do you know his story of addiction?
Did you know that Robert Downey Jr was a successful actor in both the 80’s and the 90’s? He has done at least one movie or television show almost every year since 1980. But amid that successful career, Robert Downey Jr was battling some serious demons.
Robert Downey Jr claims to have been addicted to drugs since the age of 8. During his struggles with addiction, Robert Downey was arrested numerous times on drug-related charges. He went through rehab several times (usually court ordered). He relapsed. He spent time in prison on drug-related charges.
But, with all of those years of struggle with addiction, Robert Downey finally reached sobriety. He has been clean and sober since 2001.
What We Can Learn From Robert Downey Jr for Successfully Fighting Addictions
Get help when you need it
Robert Downey Jr spent a whole lot of time in court-ordered rehabs, and behind bars. But he finally made a successful recovery when he was willing to seek out help on his own. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Robert Downey said:
“When someone says, ‘I wonder if maybe I should go to rehab?’ Well, uh, you’re a wreck, you just lost your job, and your wife left you. Uh, you might want to give it a shot.”
He also discussed that after his last arrest in April of 2001, he knew he’d likely be facing more court-ordered time in prison or rehab. He said he finally got the point where he realized he “couldn’t continue doing this.” He then voluntarily reached out for help. He said that the hard part wasn’t overcoming his problems… the hard part was deciding to actually do it.
When working to overcome addiction, you must get to the point where enough is enough. You must find the help you need, and follow through with it.
