Dorm Supplies ChecklistLabor Day weekend always draws back old college memories for me of rushing around home good stores, purchasing a bunch of cute furniture and then trying to cram it all into my room. I always had a cute dorm room because I picked specific themes and designed around them, but looking back I have come to realize how silly it was.

I spent so much money on stuff that I no longer have minus a few vases and lamps. I kept the bed sheets too, but my bed is a queen and those twin sheets just aren’t going to fit. Before you go out and spend hundreds to decorate your room, check out my dorm check list.

The Ultimate Dorm Check List

In college you need a few important items in your dorm to survive, a few to keep you sane and a couple more to make your space livable. You do not need to go all out and spend in total, over $4,000 for four years on furniture. Wait until you have a permanent place.

The Essentials

  • Computer & printer (and if you can’t get one locate where your school has labs right away)
  • Desk Lamp
  • Bed Sheets
  • A few pillows
  • Pillow cases
  • Mattress pad
  • Clothing hangers
  • Laundry basket
  • Storage container
  • Shower tote
  • Microwave
  • Paper plates/plastic utensils
  • Snacks
  • Basic medications
  • Outlet strip
  • Cleaning supplies
  • The regular list of school supplies from paper to pencils, and you know the deal

The Sanity List

  • Flip flops- to use in those disgusting showers that never seem clean
  • Nightlight/flashlight- for those nights when your roomie has to sleep and you have to cram
  • Headphones- for those nights when your neighbors have a party or those countless nights were you hear too much personal business through the paper thin walls
  • Extension cords- because there are never enough outlets and even the power strips cord will not be long enough to reach your bed
  • USB flash drive- to save EVERYTHING
  • Alarm Clock- how else are you going to wake up? Your cell phone? Ha! We all know how easy it is to hit ignore on that thing
  • DVD collection and TV- there are going to be rainy days, cold days, sick days and hangover days
  • Waste basket- using grocery bags is only going to work for so long
  • Postage Stamps- to send mail to your loved ones

The Decorative List

  • Posters- to decorate your wall
  • Pictures- to remind you of friends from afar
  • Cork/magnet/chalk/white board- to remind yourself of important events/things that are happening and already happened
  • Plants- to keep your space green
  • Wall art-anything you like from flags, to paintings to tapestries
  • Curtains- something different to spice up those bland plastic shutters
  • Something Aspirational- ask yourself what your goals are and create something to remind you of your goals every morning when you wake up. It should be the first thing you see every day.

That is really all you need, plus some text books and food to keep you alive which you don’t even really need if you signed up for meal plans. Like I said, don’t go crazy and be practical. You are only living there for one year and the next you will have a new dorm so there is no need to make it overly personal.

Don’t forget to add  swim dresses to your checklist for those late night swimming parties!
