Have you been locked out of your apartment home? If you haven’t, count yourself as one of the lucky ones. It can happen to any of us at any given time. You approach your door and reach for your keys, and you can’t find them.

You go back to your vehicle and search it from the front to the rear. But they are nowhere to be found. But hopefully you gave one of your neighbors the spare key right? So what should you do know? You can panic of course, but thats not going to get you anywhere.

If you have a pet inside that can make your situation a little more demanding. Ok so you have just found yourself in this situation. Read on for some steps that you can take if you ever find yourself in this predicament.

Steps you can take before being locked out

1) You should have the numbers of important people in your phone. This should include the leasing office, the maintenance crew, a locksmith, and possible even the police department. 2) Whatever you do don’t leave a spare key underneath a potted plant or even under a doormat. Every burglar knows to look here first. 3) If you’re deciding on who you should give a spare key to, think carefully.

This person should be someone you trust. It could be a member of your family and/or someone that lives within a short drive of your place. Remember that this individual will be able to enter your dwelling. So be sure that its someone that you can place your trust in. It’s not the best idea to give this key to a girlfriend/boyfriend.

Also when you decide to give this person the key, add a colorful keychain with it. You surely want your key to stand out. 4) But doesn’t it make sense to give a spare to a neighbor that you trust? Well there are both pros and cons to this tip. Chances are you don’t know this person real well unless you already had a friend living in the complex. You will have to make a decision whether this someone you can trust.

Also if they move out before you do, you must remember to get it back from them. 5) But for the rest of us who don’t know anyone in the complex and don’t have friends nearby, here is another tip you can use. If you own a Smartphone and have a case you’re in luck. Simply place the key behind your phone. You won’t lose sight of your Smartphone and you will always have a spare key.

But your already locked out? What you can do now:

But assuming you didn’t follow any of the above rules and your standing in front of your locked door, here are some tips. A) If the leasing office is still open, head that way. They should be able to open the door for you. If you live in a community without a leasing office, there probably is a contact number for them.

Call them. This isn’t the first time this has happened to one of their tenants. B) You might find yourself calling a locksmith. Yes you will have to wait some time. That is the biggest downside and of course their fee. But at least you will be able to get in. Let them know you live in an apartment building.
