If you arrive home and see that your home has been burglarized there are a few things you must do in order to protect yourself from harm as well as ensure that you can receive compensation from your insurance company.
Never walk into your home if you can see that someone has broken into the house.
They could still be inside. You should either go back to your car and call the police or go to a neighbor’s house to call the police. You can watch your home but do not go in until after officers give you the clear that no one is inside the house.
If you saw the person or the car leaving your home, be sure to write down the description as soon as possible. This way when the officer asks you can provide him with the information.
Too many times, people forget by the time the police arrive and cannot provide a good description. The more information the police have on the person and the vehicle the better chances you will have of getting your belongings back.
Once you have been giving the all clear it is time to enter your home and determine what items are missing. Be sure to write down every item that is gone. You should make a list that names each item, a description and the replacement cost.
If you have any of the serial numbers of any of the electronics, this will also be good information to provide to the police. You should have at least three copies of the items missing, one for the police, your insurance company, and one to retain for your records. Check to make sure if any medications, check book or credit cards are missing as well.
You will want to call the companies and have your bank account or credit cards frozen or replaced so the burglar will not be able to use them. In the case of your medication, some medications especially if they are narcotics will need to be reported to your doctor and your pharmacy so you can receive a replacement.
File an insurance claim with your agent. Talk with your insurance company to learn the procedure. You will need to fill out all forms and provide a list of items that were stolen or broken during the robbery as well as any photos that could be helpful.
Some insurance companies may also ask for receipts or other documents pertaining to the items that were stolen. Write down the name of the person you discussed your claim with along with the date and time and all information that was discussed.
The next step should be to beef up your security measures. Make sure the locks in your house are modern and bump key proof, the best thing to do in this case is to contact a locksmith services company and consult directly with the technician.
You should change all locks in the home even if the burglar kicked in the front door to get into your home. They may have found an extra key or even paid close attention to the type of locks you have so they will know how to the pick the lock the next time they come back.
Make sure the locks on your windows are in working order and are the best on the market. If someone can slide a card through the top of the window and unlock it, then you are not stopping the burglar.
Installing deadbolts are one of the best ways to protect your family and your belongings. There are several different types of deadbolts available on the market today. Choosing the best high quality heavy-duty deadbolt is the best way to protect your home and your family.
