coupon-salesA lot of consumers swear that couponing is an amazing way to pinch pennies and make ends meet.

However, couponing has a lot of pitfalls as well, and if you’re not careful enough, you could end up spending more than your intended budget.

To prevent that from happening, here are some of the no nonsense tips for couponing effectively:

Tip No. 1: Never purchase items which you do not need.

The very reason for why you are couponing is so that you can save on your groceries and other bills. However, all of this will be useless if you neutralize your savings by buying items which you do not actually need only because you have coupons for them.

To prevent this from happening, make sure that you always have a list with you when you go shopping. Having an actual list will keep you from straying than just creating one mentally.

Tip No. 2: Always take time to know about regional policies.

Just because you know the policy of a certain store like the back of your hand does not mean that all of the stores in that chain carry the same policy. For instance, the doubling policy of one store may differ from that of another store in terms of the specific days and dates that this policy will take effect.

Make sure to always ask for the store’s policy before heading there for a shopping trip to make sure that your coupons will still take effect.

Tip No. 3: Learn about stacking.

Why should you stop at using one coupon when you can get an item for free by stacking coupons together? Most stores allow shoppers to use a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon on a single item.

This means that if you have a $1 store coupon for a brand of $2 peanut butter and you have a manufacturer coupon for $1, then you can have the item for free.

Tip No. 4: Use your store coupons during a sale.

Another way to maximize your savings is by using your coupons during a store sale. When combined together, you can save significantly on a number of items. This may require a degree of patience on your part but sales usually come a week or two after your store gives out coupons. You can also wait for when your store decides to double the value of coupons to use them.
