4 Odd Benefits To Having Sex

Sex CoupleIn some circles, sex has gotten a bad rap for transmitting disease and causing teenage pregnancies.

With that being said, sex can also promote good health in some surprising ways.

In case you needed more reasons to get romantic, consider the following little-known benefits associated with sexual activity.

Stronger Immune Systems

Research out of Wilkes University in Pennsylvania suggests that sex could help fight off infections. In fact, it appears to be so effective, researchers found that having sex just once or twice per week resulted in higher levels of immunoglobulin A: an important antibody which makes our immune systems stronger.

Treating Migraines

Millions of Americans take strong medications to treat their debilitating migraine headaches; however, according to a recent study, they might be better of ditching their pharmaceuticals in favor of romantic activity.

Researchers out of the University of Munster in Germany found that sexual activity had a positive impact on migraines for many people. In fact, sex was such a powerful medication that it alleviated or stopped migraines in 60 percent of people who tried it. With that being said, sex may not be a good idea for everyone.

Since it increases heart rates, sexual activity could intensify cluster headaches in certain people. Additionally, according to Dr. Ken Siegel, any sort of do-it-yourself pain remedy isn’t likely to help the millions who suffer from migraine-like headaches, which aren’t really migraines at all.

“I treat numerous patients who experience debilitating headaches that seem like migraines,” he said. “In actuality, these intense headaches are caused by temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMD.

In the end, if you are having recurring headaches, you should meet with a medical expert for a professional assessment, instead of trying to treat your problem on your own. Ultimately, you may discover that your problem is quite treatable and not something you have to live with.”

Looking Younger

After studying over 3,000 people between the ages of 30 and 101, researchers at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Scotland found that more sex appeared to promote more youthful appearances.

While they can’t say for sure, the researchers suggest that sex may promote youthfulness by boosting the body’s natural production of human growth hormone.

Stress Killer

To see if sex might alleviate stress, researchers asked 46 adult subjects to give speeches in front of a large crowd. Without telling the participants, however, the researchers told the audience to act disinterested and bored.

To evaluate stress levels, researchers tested each participant’s blood pressure before and after his or her speech. Ultimately, subjects who reported having more sex produced the lowest readings: a clear indication that sex can somehow play a role in keeping us calm and centered during stressful situations.

Making Time

Sadly, over time many long-term couples have trouble rekindling the same romantic interest they enjoyed when they were first dating. When schedules and responsibilities disrupt sex lives, separation often results.

If you and your partner are looking for a way to make your relationship and your bodies healthier, consider putting physical intimacy higher on your list of priorities.
