However one of the most popular and well known celebrations of love is held in Asia and is called Loy Krathong. Now today Valentine’s Day is celebrated as the US does on February 14th but it is not the original celebration of love and romance in the countries surrounding Thailand.
Loy Krathong is one of the largest love and romance celebrations in the world and is held at the end of November or early December in Thailand. However as we celebrate only one day, the celebration in Thailand is over a span of four days.
It is a tradition in Thailand as we have our traditions here. This festival of love and romance is celebrated all over the country but the best place to go to experience the celebration is by the river in the city of Chiang Mai, Thailand.
It is celebrated by people making homemade or store brought lanterns that are lit and released into the sky over the river. In Thailand it is also common for people to decorate small boats with lights and decor and send down the river as an offering to the spirit of the waters.
Thai Water Spirits
The spirit of the waters in Thailand is believed to bring good luck, fortune and love to those who give the offerings. This is believed to be the original reason why the people of Thailand celebrated this holiday but over time it became more of a celebration of love in the last few hundred years.
Although the people of Thailand have not forgotten about the spirit of the water and still give their offerings, it is widely celebrated by couples these days. Together the couples light their lanterns and walk down to the river and hold hands and release their lantern which is said to bring good luck and longevity to their relationship.
This festival is not just for lovers or couples, people of all ages come and watch this fascinating tradition. During the festival they have a lot of activities going on during the day and night to celebrate, and even have activities and coloring contests for the children as well. So no matter what age you are or where you are from, this is a great experience for anyone who may visit of for travelers during this time of year.
