The iPad from Apple is perhaps one of the most revolutionary pieces of technology of the last decade. It has changed the way in which we spend our leisure time, share information and communicate with people all over the globe. The iPad has also helped to transform the world of education in a number of different ways. What follows is an overview of some of the ways in which the iPad can be used as an educational tool by students, their parents, schools and the older generation.

For children

Most children love to learn by playing games, and the iPad offers a whole host of special educational games for children to use. These educational games are available for children of all ages and levels, from those who are just starting to read and write to advanced students who are sitting their GCSEs and A Levels. The games can be used to reinforce knowledge learnt in the classroom and help children to gain new information in fun and exciting new ways.

For parents

Parents can take part in the educational experience alongside their children. Many of the educational game apps that have been designed for the iPad have multiplayer options, which allow parents and their children to play and learn together.

For schools

A wide range of textbooks have been developed for the iPad by leading textbook publishers such as McGraw-Hill, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Pearson Education. Unlike two-dimensional textbooks which can appear to be flat and uninteresting, these textbooks are three dimensional and come complete with cartoon graphics, music, videos and many other types of media that are sure to appeal to students of all ages.

One of the main advantages of these textbooks is that information is constantly updated and is easy to store. Schools no longer need to find space for thousands of textbooks in their classrooms. Whereas traditional paper textbooks can easily become torn, defaced and damaged in other ways, the iPad textbooks remain in perfect condition and can be used simultaneously by large numbers of students.

Special iPad apps are also available for educators to use to help them to design and teach lessons. Entire courses are available at the touch of a button that provide a full range of colourful and interactive lesson plans in a wide range of subjects such as science, mathematics, English, history, geography and many more. Teachers can use the large display screen of the iPad to present these lesson plans to students, or connect the iPad to special screens so that the entire class can clearly see the images and messages that are presented.

For the older generation

Older people can keep their minds sharp by learning new skills. The beauty of the iPad is that it makes it possible to learn from the comfort of your own home. In addition to textbooks and learning games, there are also a wide range of other types of educational apps for the older generation to make use of. It is possible to download apps to learn new languages, crafts such as wood carving or basket weaving and cookery. All this and much more is available at the touch of a button, and the large screens of the iPad and the adjustable size of the text make it easy for people with failing eyesight to get the most out of the learning experience.

These are just a few of the ways in which the iPad can be used for educational purposes. The great thing about this device is that new apps are constantly being created for it, and many are available completely free of charge. As the popularity of the iPad continues to grow, it can only be expected that users will be treated to more exciting educational apps and platforms.
